ITINERARY:

Get ready to enjoy a fun, educational, and impressive day tour to Sedona including a stop at prehistoric Montezuma Castle State Park and the "King Copper" town of Jerome. After a complimentary pick up from most central Phoenix and Scottsdale hotels you will start your route north. The geological change from the mighty saguaros of the Sonoran Desert Phoenix area (1,117 feet), to the unique rock formations of Sedona (4,350 feet), and the hillside town of Jerome (5,066 feet) is remarkable.

Traveling north into the Verde Valley we make our first stop at Montezuma Castle National Monument for approximately 30-40 minutes. This pre-historic, 5 stories high, 20 room apartment, is considered one of the best-preserved cliff dwellings in North America. Built by the Sinagua people, it was occupied from as early as A.D. 1200. President Theodore Roosevelt proclaimed this prehistoric relic "one of the greatest ethnological value and scientific interest." Why is it called a cliff dwelling? Because it is built 100 feet above the land right in the side of the limestone cliff! Truly an amazing feat.

Next, we begin our tour of the Red Rock country of Sedona via highway 179. We'll visit the towns most beautiful locations, including photo stops at the Chapel of the Holy Cross and Bell Rock Vista. The chapel offers one of the most panoramic vistas overlooking Sedona's red cliffs and towering sandstone spires. Southwest Tours' exclusive Coconino National Forest Service permit allows us the opportunity to take you to some of the most stunning photographic locations in the area.

We continue through downtown Sedona in route to Oak Creek Canyon with several stops that may include the natural water slide of Slide Rock State Park and Indian Gardens.

After lunch, you can either spend some time shopping in downtown Sedona's unique shops or Tlaquepaque Arts & Crafts Village or you can continue on a sightseeing trip with the driver/tour guide. Other stops may include Airport Vista, Red Rock Loop Road, a short venture up Schnebly Hill or other scenic stops.

The next stop on this amazing trip back in time is to the start of the Arizona mining industry. Clinging to the side of Mingus Mountain, the small haven known as Jerome takes us back to the days of the copper boom-towns. It is not difficult to imagine what it was like here a hundred years ago; miners filling the streets, saloons, and brothels and ore wagons constantly bumping along the bustling, winding roads. Today, Jerome has become a thriving artist community where the spectacular views of the Verde Valley and Sedona have to be a real source of inspiration for the artists and craftspeople who reside there. Your Jerome tour will include a stop at the Audrey Headframe State Park where you will get a unique look into the history of mining in Jerome. There will be time for you to explore Jerome on your own as well before heading back to Phoenix in the Valley of the Sun.

You will get back to your pick up location between 5:30 and 6:00 p.m
